The race is on. Who will arrive at Research Colony 227C first: a rescue ship from the Orion Navy, or space pirates intent on taking the planet’s rare and valuable androids?
Laura wants nothing more than to look after her ill spouse, but the pressures of command weigh upon her. How can she balance all of her conflicting responsibilities?
Damon wishes they could support their wife more, but adjusting to sudden onset chronic illness in the form of gravity sickness is a challenge that keeps them occupied.
Meanwhile, the android Capella has learned of her unusual connection to the young clone of Dr Neale, Bex. How much of herself should she share with those she feels a connection to, and how much does she risk by putting those connections first?
When visitors arrive in orbit, more than one person on 227C is challenged by who has arrived, and rescue becomes a far more complex prospect than they expected.
Laura, Damon, and their friends have life-changing decisions to make, ones that will change the fate of Research Colony 227C forever.
Sanctuary on Planet Android is a queer found family sci fi romance with a F/F/NB throuple in a green flag romance.
The door banged open, and Damon jumped, knocked out of their self-pity. Laura strode into the room, her face flushed as if she’d run. As always, Damon perked up as soon as their wife was there. But they couldn’t avoid noticing the bags under Laura’s eyes. She was working too hard.
“Sorry I’m late,” she huffed as she stomped over to the bed. Shaula stepped back, letting Laura take the closest position on that side. “What did I miss?”
“Damon has already been administered the psilocybin,” said Capella. “Shaula has just finished taking measurements.”
Laura sat down on the side of the bed and took Damon’s hand. “I’m so sorry, babe. I missed everything.”
“It’s OK,” said Damon, though their heart pinched with jealousy over whatever had kept Laura away.
READ MORE“I will return tomorrow with the framework,” said Shaula.
“Tomorrow?” asked Laura, a catch in her voice.
“What, you don’t want me to have the support? It’ll make life easier,” Damon joked.
But they understood when Laura gave them a guilty look. She was going to be busy tomorrow. Of course she would be.
Damon’s stomach dropped. But if there was one thing Damon hated being, it was an emotional burden. They hid their disappointment from Laura, digging deep to find the enthusiasm. They squeezed her hand. “It’s OK, love.”
“No, it’s not.”
Shaula and Capella moved to the other side of the room to give them some privacy.
“Where are you going?” Damon asked Laura.
“Robin has ordered me to Dr Neale’s lab tomorrow. She wants me to oversee another pass of the facility, to see if we can get control of the SecSats. Everyone’s getting antsy about it.”
“And because others failed, she’s sending you because you get results.”
Laura leaned closer. Damon could see their own face under shaggy dark hair mirrored in Laura’s grey eyes. “I want to be here with you,” said Laura.
“I know, love. But plenty of others are relying on you too.” Privately, Damon thought Robin relied on Laura too much. But they’d never say so out loud.
The door clicked behind Laura as Shaula left. They both then looked up as Capella approached the bed. “Is everything OK?” Laura asked Capella.
Damon hadn’t even noticed anything odd about Capella to ask about. What had Laura seen? But then, Laura had been looking at Capella a lot. Like, a lot.
“Shaula has asked me to report to the android repair lab in half an hour. I am overdue for my regular service. But I must take Damon out for their meeting with Altair.”
“You’ve been putting it off?” asked Damon. See, they were a bother.
Capella didn’t answer, only looked down to avoid eye contact.
“Go, Capella,” said Laura. “I can assist Damon for a few hours before my next task. Don’t put it off any longer.” She gave the pink android a smile. “In fact, why don’t you go now? Take a half hour for yourself before your appointment.”
“Understood. Thank you.” Capella left, quietly closing the door behind her.
Laura’s eyes lingered as she left. Damon nudged her with their knee. They whistled. “Oh, look at you,” they said.
Laura blushed. “I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t be, love. It’s OK. Encouraged, even. I haven’t walked back on that promise, and now seems like a good time to take advantage of it.”
“No! Think of the power dynamic!”
“She’s morally no different from colonists on other planets, and I know you’ve taken advantage of our open relationship before on mission.”
“Those others weren’t your nurse carer, Damon! That’s a big difference. And it’s been a long time.”
That was true. While they’d always been in an open relationship, over the last few years, they’d been so busy with their careers, Laura in particular, that neither of them had taken other lovers. In fact, they’d both held back a lot ever since they’d had one rather disastrous attempt at a throuple relationship with an ex of theirs called Emil, who had left them both after Damon had come out as non-binary. That arsehole.
“And there’s the whole thing with her being an android…” Laura continued.
“Marcie’s always been emphatic about the androids here being sentient enough to consent like anyone else.”
“I don’t know if she’d be interested…”
“You can’t know unless you let her know you’d be open to the idea.”
Laura huffed, the blush on her face disappearing down the collar of her uniform. “Drop it, Damon. Please. It’s…too scary.”
