Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site the webpage collects the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on this site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

How long I retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so the website can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

If you sign up to my mailing list, I will retain your email, name, and clickthrough statistics indefinitely, until such time as you unsubscribe from the newsletter.

If you contact me through the email contact form on this website, I will retain data such as your email address, name, and correspondence indefinitely, unless requested otherwise.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data the website holds about you, including any data you have provided. You can also request that I erase any personal data the website holds about you. This does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

If you sign up to my email list, you may unsubscribe at any time. You may also request that I double check that all data pertaining to you has been deleted from my email marketing service, MailerLite.

If you have sent me an email through the contact form, you may request that I delete your correspondence with me from my email server and contact form database.

Site security

Visitor comments and emails sent through the contact form are checked through reCAPTCHA v.3, a third-party service that collects some data about you for the purposes of site security. reCAPTCHA is a Google service, and as such is subject to the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.

Mailing list

I use MailerLite to manage my email marketing subscriber list and to send emails to my subscribers. I will use the collected email address and name only for the purposes of sending my email newsletter, and no data will be sold or transmitted to any company or individual, other than MailerLite for the purposes of email campaign management. MailerLite is a third-party provider, which may process your data using industry-standard technologies to help me monitor and improve my newsletter.

MailerLite’s privacy policy is available at https://www.mailerlite.com/legal/privacy-policy
